Windows7 Windows Seven is the new operating system of Microsoft that lets you embrace and have a glimpse of different technologies in the future that might emerge. Windows 7 was designed to be fast, stable and mature, fewer clicks and less-complexity making every task simpler.

Unlike Window Vista, Windows 7 is compatible with most of the applications and hardware in which it’s predecessor (Vista) is already compatible.

New Features and Terms that you should know

Windows 7 HomeGroup is one of the key features of Windows 7 that enables users to share files such as music, pictures, usb printers and documents easily. It simplifies the task in creating a network and sharing your files to your family members and friends. It’s like connecting to the internet via Wifi. User Account Control (UAC) is a technology designed by Microsoft that aims to increase the security by limiting the privilege of any application that will be launch until an administrator authorizes it. For simple explanation, the computer will ask you “Are you sure to launch this program?”. In Windows Vista, the technology is annoying but effective, amazingly detects and nails all the worms and rootkits that will infect your computer. In Windows 7, UAC was tweaked and by default, it will only prompts when a program makes changes requiring elevated permissions.

Fast User Switching is a feature in Windows 7, XP, Vista and other modern multi-user operating systems that allows you to open or switch to a different user accounts without closing the opened programs and files first. It is turned on by default and this makes it simpler to share a computer with your family members or others.

The desktop composition feature changes the way applications display pixels on the screen. Microsoft said If enabled, individual windows no longer draw directly to the screen or video memory. Instead, drawing is redirected to off-screen surfaces in video memory, which are then rendered into a desktop image and presented on the display.

Windows Mobility Center is a feature introduced in Windows Vista and included in almost all version of Windows 7 except the Starter Edition, that groups all functions relevant to laptops and mobility. Example: Brightness adjustments, Sound Adjustment, Battery level, External Displays, Synchronization and others. Pressing Win+X will help you access the window easily.

According to Microsoft, EFS enables transparent encryption and decryption of files by using standard and advanced cryptographic algorithms. Any individual or program that doesn't possess the key cannot read the encrypted data. Note: EFS was not designed to protect data while it's transferred from one system to another. You can read more the complete article by Microsoft: EFS

Windows Server Domain is a logical grouping of computers that shares a common database that contains the user account information and security information in a specific domain. It refers to the administrative concept of segregating groups and applying security and permissions easily to all computers inside the network by changing the settings in the server(s). Note: Physical connection is not important and you can log on to any computer on the domain without needing an account on that computer . Please read more about Windows Server Domain and it’s differences with Windows Workgroups, here.

Hiding Drives with No Media mounted in Windows 7

This is the new option in Windows 7 that will let you hide empty drives or with no mounted media in Explorer.

showhidden

Ok, Lets dig and unlock the hidden secrets behind the new feature!

Hide feature is Enabled

You can use the Start Search, type “folder option”, click to open and go to View Tab. You’ll see that “hide empty drives in the Computer folder” is selected or checked by default as shown in the picture above.

windows7showhidden

Press Win+E keys to open the Computer Window. Once it opens, We’ll noticed that we cannot see the other drives and seems… it has the same effect as hiding drives using WinBubbles in Vista. (Stay tuned for the Windows 7 version!)

hideit

If The option Hidden Files and folders > “Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives” is Selected as shown in the first picture above

showhidefilesanddrives

The drives looks like a hidden file!

Here’s the default look in Vista:

vista

The same in Windows 7 if the Hidden feature is unchecked (“hide empty drives in the Computer folder” option)

hideemptydriveunchecked

Nice new feature in Windows 7 right?

Anyway, Let’s go into the deeper stuff. Open Command prompt or cmd to see if the drives is really disabled or it is just hidden in My Computer Window.

cmd2

“The device is not ready”…

“There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive \Device\Harddisk1\DR1”

So, we can now say that it is just hidden in My Computer window.

:)

Let’s find out in the registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

registry

When HideDrivesWithNoMedia is 1, it corresponds to the Checked option. If 0, Hiding empty drives feature is disabled.

Cool Right?

I Googled if someone already blogged or written an article about the registry setting.

google3

Looks like I’m the first person in the Internet to wrote something or documented the registry setting.

:D

Great!

Hotkey to open a program in Administrator mode or Privilege in Windows 7

startmenu

While writing an article about the new and useful keyboard shortcut keys in Windows 7.

One keyboard key combination feature really kept my attention:

Shift+Click on a Taskbar item

It creates a new instance of any application easily.

Usually our instinct is to try others keys…

So, I tried CTRL+Shift+Click on a Taskbar item.

Wow! It opens the program in Administrator mode. UAC opens!

Almost all programs are working even Windows Explorer… this is really useful for power users. Nice!

Coolest Thing…

It works on Start Menu Recent Program List.

Simply press CTRL+Shift+Click the program in the Start Menu and it will open in Administrative privilege.

Great for launching another instance of Command Prompt or CMD as administrator in Windows 7, windows explorer, paint, wordpad for hacking wei, notepad for saving files in disk with limited privileges and many more!

Usually in Windows Vista (also works in Windows 7), we type cmd in Start menu Search and press CTRL+Shift+Enter key to launch app.

Also, you can Right-Click and Choose Run As Administrator.

Now you can open another by simply using the keyboard combination and a single mouse click.

Note: You can also use the middle mouse button to click the programs in the taskbar. However, it will not work in Start Menu recent list.

Enjoy!

How to Make Windows 7 Password Recovery Disk

securityThis is one of the most useful feature in Windows 7. The password reset feature will let you create a backup of user account and password information to  USB flash Drive, so that incase you forget your password or lose the smart card.

You can still accessed your account by resetting the password using a USB Stick.

Prevention is better than Cure

It’s easy… This article came from my Vista Tip. I’ve just modified and added some few information.

Push the Orb Ball, Open the start menu and simply click the User Account Picture.

startmenu

User Accounts Window will open and click the Create a password reset disk located at the left side of the window.

create

The Forgotten Password Wizard will open and click the Next Button

Set and Change the drive location

disk

If you have an existing data or backup, this message will appear:

replace

*you can move the data or the password file by copying to another location.

Input the current password

 password3

If the account doesn’t have a password, leave the box blank (lol…)

finished4

Finished. Keep it in a safe place. (secret)

Well, this article is not for a Geek. Most of them will open the User Account Window by pressing Win+R and type Control Userpasswords.

Ok, How to use the disk? Input any incorrect password and Just Click the Reset Password during logon.

For me, I usually use the hack in Utilman.exe and create a hidden backdoor in Windows Vista (Also works in Windows 7). So that, I can reset any user accounts any time without knowing the password. :D

Enjoy!!!
